Recover data on Mac after Re-installation

There may be many instances under which we might have to re-install the Mac OS. In majority of the cases, when the Mac has been severely affected due to a virus attack or malware, and there are very high chances of losing out on all our data, we are left with no other option but to re-install the Mac OS. This might not be the only reason, as we might also go in for a re-installation when we want to upgrade our Mac, or perform re-installation when the Mac has crashed. Data loss is bound to occur if the re-installation process is not performed in the right manner.

There are usually three methods in which re-installation can be performed. In the first method, we go in for the up gradation of the existing Mac OS. This might sometimes result in loss of the data that previously existed on the hard drive. In the second method, we take a backup of all the data on the hard drive, and perform a re-installation of the Mac OS. This method is relatively safer as chances of losing data are minimal. In the third and the least preferred method, we might re-install the Mac OS by deleting all the data present on the hard drive. This is not a recommended method, but under some circumstances, we might have to make use of this type of re-installation.

The first and the last methods given above could result in data loss from the hard drive. We would then require the help of a data recovery software for recovery of data from the affected hard drive. Mac Recovery software lets you recover data lost after partitioning of the Mac OS with ease. This software also lets you recover data from lost/deleted partitions of Mac.

  • Display default volume(s) - This option displays the list of default volumes that are present on the system. This option can be used to recover data from the existing volumes on the system.
  • Scan for volume(s) - The lost, missing and corrupted partitions are displayed when you select this option. This option can be used to search for volumes that have been lost, and recover the data from these volumes.
  • Raw Search on Physical Drive (File Recovery) – Sector by sector file search for recovery of lost files can be done by selecting this option.

Step 5: Clicking the Next button opens a new window that lets you select the Scan Method, as shown in Figure e. You can select from the two options available.

  • Standard Scan- The Standard Scan is a time saving and quick scanning process, that can be used, if there is no significant corruption in the file system.
  • Advanced Scan- Advanced Scan is a more detailed and time consuming process than Satndard Scan, which conducts a extensive search for all the lost data.

Select the Standard Scan option.

Step 6: Clicking the Standard Scan option, starts the scanning process. The software scans the selected drive, for the lost data, and lists all the found files and folders in a tree format, as shown in Figure f.

Step 7: Once the files have been listed, the next step is to save the recovered data onto a safe location. Select the files that you want to save, or alternatively click on the Root folder to select all the files, and click the Save button.

Clicking the Save button, opens a window where you can specify the destination drive, where data is to be saved. Select the destination drive of your choice, and click the Save button.

As soon as you click the Save button, the data that was selected is saved onto the selected destination drive. The recovered data can now be accessed as before.
